It was 8:30a.m. on a Monday morning. ‘Why is my boss calling me at this time?’ I thought, as I reluctantly picked up the call.

‘Good morning. Yeah I’m good. Remember I took the week off? Everything’s fine. Thanks for checking on me. Have a nice day at the office’.

I rubbed my eyes and wondered why she was calling to find out if I was okay.

As I headed for the bathroom, I remembered that Sayo would be flying in today. Sayo and I were good together. Believe me, we had been through trials for Africa, but we were still standing. We took the week off so she could fly in for our engagement pictures and spend some time together.

With so much excitement, I looked into the mirror.

We agreed that I would not pick her at the airport. Something about her wanting to take a cab home and not disturb me. Anyways, since I couldn’t pick her up, I called my mum to get some recipes. I would cook. I started off by making egusi soup. I am sure she will tease me when she tastes it. Then she will say ‘It’s the thought that counts T.Y’. She was the only one that called me that. I smiled and went on to boil the yam for iyan (pounded yam), as a proper Yoruba boy.

I sat down in the living room to chill after all the struggle. I really don’t know how ladies do it. There was a screamer on the TV, another plane crash. This happened yesterday, Sunday, June 3rd, 2012. Shortly after, the manifest was shown on the screen. Number 6 on the Casualty List was a ‘Sayo’. What a coincidence.  ‘God help Nigeria, thank God my Sayo decided to fly in today’, I thought to myself.

It is 5 p.m. Her flight was to land at 3:30 p.m. It takes 30 minutes to get here from the airport. Maybe it’s the traffic.

Seconds turned into minutes, minutes into hours…
